A change of pace….
I made the decision in April to slow myself down and in doing so to try and look at things differently. I had not long finished writing my first online plan and whilst I had loved the challenge, I was drained physically, mentally and emotionally. Looking through my list of commitments and jobs to do it dawned on me that it is all very fast and furious. I operate at 100 miles an hour for the majority of the time, and always have done.
I have been reading ‘The Gratitude Diaries’ by Janice Kaplan and it has really struck a chord with me. The basic message is that in our endless pursuit of doing more, having more and feeling more we fail to appreciate what we already have. By slowing down and taking the time to be grateful we will be far happier. I was starting to feel overwhelmed with everything that I was trying to do and not stopping at any point to celebrate the successes. It was always about the next step, the next project and being busy. So I made a commitment to slowing down…..
I decided that I needed to build some time in my week where there was a change of pace and a focus on right now. I was still going to do all the things that I would normally do for work, family and friends but I was going to take some time to look after me. And that was how I found Yoga. I would not have thought that anything could change everything so rapidly and so fundamentally. Who knew that slowing down and focusing on your breathing could deliver so much? I’ve used muscles that I didn’t know I had. I’ve relaxed and zoned out and even fallen asleep while relaxing at the end of my practice. All little things but they have made a huge difference. I’ve found a class that I enjoy, had some great solo sessions, found instructors that I respect and met some amazing ladies too. I have been known to sit down and do nothing, which for me is a huge achievement!
So my message to you today is to give yourself some time to relax and enjoy where you are right now. It doesn’t have to be yoga – find your thing. It could be a long , slow cycle, a walk or a long soak in the bath. It could be a massage or a facial. It could even be a snooze on the sofa. Recharge your batteries and see the magic in what is already there. Jobs come and go and your family will soon grow. We don’t know what is round the corner and we can’t control that at all. What we can do is to look after ourselves and take time to relax and recover. Put a time in the diary each week to do whatever works for you and treat it like every other appointment you have and do it. You could try writing 3 things each day that you are grateful for and you will soon start to see things differently. If you feel rested and full of positivity everything else becomes easier and less of a chore.
I would love to hear how you have made your changes – sharing stories helps to inspire others!
