Many of you liked and commented on my progress on Facebook and I had lots of questions and requests for help in going sugar free or at least reducing the amount of sugar consumed. So here it is. Now for the science

The recommended intake of sugar is around 7 teaspoons a day. To put that in perspective an average can of drink contains 10 teaspoons of sugar. It is not a huge leap to then consider the growing obesity crisis and the ever increasing numbers of people developing health issues such as Type 2 Diabetes. If we continue to consume the levels of sugar that we are then it is going to get steadily worse. A study at Albany University in New York shows that 70% of those with Type 2 diabetes will develop Alzheimer’s too.

Taking control of your sugar intake will improve your energy levels and have direct benefits for your health now but it will also affect your future too. I don’t know about you but I want to be healthy, active and independent into retirement and beyond. I was horrified to read that the NHS performs more than 7,000 amputations each year as a result of complications from diabetes. Don’t forget that Type 2 diabetes is a reversible condition that is caused largely by what we eat. There is clearly a need to take action to do what we can to protect our future. There are no guarantees but reducing our sugar intake is a good start.
